Bears-Whats All the Russ About?

Another week into the 2021 offseason and another huge name has dropped hints that he wants off his current team. QB Russel Wilson named four teams he would waive his no-trade clause for. Shockingly the Chicago Bears were one of his choices. Most think Wilson is just venting his displeasure in hopes that the Seattle Seahawks will finally get him some help on the offensive line, but still.

I don’t think this trade will go anywhere, but the Bears would not be doing their jobs if they didn’t at least start a conversation with the Seahawks. Wilson is easily one of the five best QBs in the league and has plenty of years ahead of him. He would immediately become the best QB the Bears have ever had.

In my last post, I talked about QB Trey Lance as an option for the Bears. But since then, Lance has gotten more traction. Before the panic sets in, there may be some good alternatives. This draft has many quality QBs, and the Bears know that QB Nick Foles isn’t a long-term solution.

QB’s Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, and Trey Lance will most likely be gone before the Bears pick at 20. But there are still quite a few QB options. One of those QBs who intrigues me is QB Kyle Trask from the University of Florida. In any other draft, Trask would be a first-round draft pick.

Trask put up some fantastic numbers (4,283YDS 43TD 8INT) that show a vast improvement from his 2019 season (2,941YDS 25TD 7INT). Trask is also an ideal size for a QB; he sits at 6’ 5” and weighs 240LBS. Some knocks are his lack of mobility, lack of rushing, and Florida QBs have not fared well in the league. The Bears would need to jump on Trask if he fell to them at 20 because he will not be available for their second-round pick.

I think the Bears should take a long look at Trask. Trask looks like he has the goods to become a great QB if he gets the right coach and system implemented for him. The Bears management need to be extremely active leading up to the draft. There are many QBs and other draftable options that could really get the franchise back on the right track. GM Ryan Pace has a huge chance to prove he understands what it takes to be a good GM in this league. Your move Mr. Pace.
