MLB-Best/Worst for Wednesday, September 24, 2020

Best-Danny Jansen C Toronto Blue Jays-4-4 3R 3RBI 2HR

The Blue Jays catching duo have gotten hot at the right time. The playoffs are just around the corner, and they are going to need all the offense they can get to take down the Oakland Athletics, the #2 in the American League. Jansen has struggled this year, but his game tonight took down the New York Yankees, 14-1. Jansen raised his batting average .041 points today after his perfect night that was only a triple away from a cycle. This gives the Blue Jays two catchers they can feel confident in once the playoffs start. That is a weight off of a team’s shoulders because the catcher needs time off more than any other position.

Other Notables: Trevor Bauer SP Reds-8IP 4H 1ER 1BB 12K 1W; Bryce Harper OF Phillies-2-2 4R 2RBI 3BB 2HR; Zach Eflin SP Phillies-8IP 6H 3ER 1BB 9K 1W; Franchy Cordero OF Royals-3-4 2R 5RBI 2HR; Nathan Eovaldi SP Red Sox-6IP 7H 0ER 1BB 8K 1W.

Worst-Carlos Martinez SP Cardinals-5IP 9H 8ER 2BB 3K 82PC 1L

The Cardinals are in the middle of a huge battle for the National League’s final four playoff spots. Lucky for them, they got to play the lowly Kansas City Royals, not that it mattered because Carlos Martinez has been so bad this season that he blew this very winnable game. The Cardinals could have made some gains for the playoffs, but Martinez gave away the game inning by inning. The Cardinals need to take him out of the rotation immediately. They need to try him out of the bullpen and see if this helps his confidence. The stuff is still there, but this dude can’t start anymore.

Extra Trash: Cedric Mullins OF Orioles-0-5 2K; Zach Grienke SP Astros-4.2IP 8H 3ER 1BB 5K; Christian Yelich OF Brewers-0-4 3K; Masahiro Tanaka SP Yankees-4IP 8H 3ER 3BB 5K 1L; James McCann C White Sox-0-4 4K.
