MLB-Best/Worst for Sunday, August 16, 2020

Best – Franmil Reyes OF Cleveland Indians – 3-4 2R 2HR 2RBI

The Cleveland Indians boast one of the worst offenses in the league, but the pitching has been one of the best in the league in 2020. Franmil Reyes has finally started hitting and might be what the Cleveland offense needed to get rolling.

Reyes is a big part of Cleveland’s offense. Batting fifth in their lineup, he has the most power of any of their batters. But Reyes was batting under .200 for the first 14 games of the season. Over the next eight games, Reyes’s power stroke returned to him as he recorded 4HR and 9RBI, increasing his batting average to .316.

With Reyes finally hitting and the pitching going strong, this Cleveland team might be getting even stronger. They have already played, which could be trouble for the whole league with the fantastic pitching Cleveland possesses; if their offense were to get going, they would turn into World Series frontrunners.

Other Notables: Zach Wheeler SP Phillies – 7IP 6H 2ER 1BB 4K 1W; Pedro Severino C Orioles – 3-4 1R 3RBI 1HR; Elieser Hernandez SP Marlins – 5IP 3H 0ER 0BB 9K; Stephen Piscotty OF Athletics – 2-4 1R 5RBI 1HR, Max Scherzer SP Nationals – 7IP 8H 5ER 1BB 10K 1W.

Worst – Wandy Peralta RP San Francisco Giants – 0IP 4H 5ER 1BB 0K

The Giants were meant to be one of the worst teams in baseball, but surprisingly they were playing quite well up until a week ago; well, this week, they are back towards the bottom of the MLB again. The Giants’ pitching has been atrocious, and the bullpen has been even worse.

Wandy Peralta kept that streak going and blew all other bad relievers out of the water on Sunday. Peralta could not record an out in the small amount of time he was out on the mound on Sunday. When Peralta entered the game, the Giants were only trailing by 1 to the hottest team in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, but after he departed, the Giants were down six runs. The Giants weren’t able to rally at all as the final score was 15-3, and this loss put the Giants at a miserable 8-15 on the season. Giants are in straight rebuild mode this year, but I still feel that performances like this from Peralta should never happen, and if they do, you have to let this guy get sent down or just not pitch at all for a while.

Extra Trash: Devin Solano 2B Giants – 0-5 2K; Kolby Allard SP Rangers – 3IP 8H 6ER 1BB 4K 1L; Willi Castro SS Tigers – 0-4 3K; Roel Ramirez RP Cardinals – .2IP 6H 6ER 1BB 1K; Dee Gordon 2B Mariners – 0-4 3K.
