Bears-Filling in the Foles

The Bears came into Sunday’s matchup at 2-0 and tied atop the NFC North. Still, fans and the media didn’t seem to be satisfied, not yet convinced of how good this team was or could be. Sunday proved this team still has many questions left to answer, but they moved to 3-0 and might finally have the QB to maximize their offensive capabilities.

Mitchell Trubisky (13-22 128YDS 1TD 1INT 59.7QBR 71.8RTG) wasn’t outstanding but wasn’t playing bad enough to get pulled either. Head Coach Matt Nagy pulled Trubisky after throwing an interception in the second drive of the third quarter. Trubisky was looking a lot better than he looked in the 2019 season; not only did he have a 2-0 start, he had thrown for 560YDS and  6TDs; compared to 2019 when he had ten throwing TDs for the season.  Trubisky does have three interceptions this year; still, this benching was a little premature. Trubisky should’ve had a chance to bring the Bears back for another win.

Nagy brought in veteran backup, Nick Foles, who the Bears traded for in the offseason. Foles (16-29 188YDS 3TD 1INT 65.9QBR 95.2RTG) threw three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to complete another comeback win for the Bears, 30-26. Foles got this offense clicking in ways that Trubisky wasn’t and showed the leadership qualities that Trubisky lacks. I do worry about how Foles is going to handle the Bears’ inconsistent offensive line. If there is one strength that Trubisky holds over Foles, it’s mobility.

The defensive line was fantastic in this game. Khalil Mack (5TAC .5SACK .5TFL) and Akiem Hicks (4TAC 1.5SACK 1.5TFL) blew up almost every play the Falcons came up with, especially in the second half. They were able to hold back the Falcons from answering the Bears’ offensive comeback. Allen Robinson (10REC 13TGTS 123YDS 1TD) led the offense and was the catalyst for Foles once he came in. How this man doesn’t have a contract extension is beyond me. Instead, GM Ryan Pace extended RB Tarik Cohen this past week. Unfortunately, Cohen tore his ACL will be out for the rest of the season.

None of these wins have been pretty, but the Bears are 3-0, and they sit atop the division. Despite Nagy reiterating his support for Trubisky, he announced that the Bears would be moving forward with Nick Foles. Again the Bears are 3-0. Be happy, Bears fans.
